Healthcare
Foundation Nepal supports four health posts and two outreach clinics, which provide primary healthcare, medicines and maternity services. We also run health and hygiene training, various health education campaigns, family planning and immunisation and de-worming programmes.
We operate four health posts in the villages of Maila, Melcham, Thehe and Kharpunath. In order to improve the accessibility and coverage of healthcare in the remote areas we work in, we also run two outreach clinics three-five times per month in the areas around Thehe and Kharpunath. For a nominal fee, patients receive a full check up and the required medication.

Empowering local communities to manage healthcare services
We are working closely with three local Health Management Committees to strengthen their organisational abilities and knowledge, so that they can actively plan and monitor the healthcare services we are providing in collaboration with them.
The cost of buying medicine in remote parts of Nepal is particularly prohibitive because of the transport costs involved, putting it well beyond the reach of the average person. As a result, we have made it a priority to supply badly needed basic medication via our four health posts at a highly subsidised cost. To ensure a year-round supply of medicines to the health posts, we are currently training two villages in how to operate their own Community Drug Programme.

Health education – prevention is better than cure
We run various health education campaigns in the community and in schools to increase positive attitudes to preventative healthcare and promote healthy behaviour. To enhance community self-help in primary healthcare and further reinforce awareness of public health issues, we have trained a group of Female Community Health Volunteers in Maila, Melcham and Thehe. In addition, we hold regular support meetings with mothers’ groups to promote knowledge about women’s and children’s health, family planning and sanitation. We have also started initial HIV awareness training in Thehe.

Maternity services, family planning and children’s healthcare
Reproductive health and family planning are key issues in the villages where we work, so we provide a home delivery service attended by skilled midwives and family planning assistance, with take up proving to be very high. As part of our school healthcare programme we offer de-worming, while immunisation is provided via the health posts.
