Construction of new classrooms at Ram Dev Lower Secondary School in Thehe, Humla - Financed by Foundation Nepal

Working with local primary schools

To ease the financial burden of sending children to school, we provided educational materials, including copy books, pens, pencils and erasers, to 1,087 students in eight schools in Thehe, Kharpunath and Dandafaya during 2008. In a number of primary schools, we will be training teachers in English and general teaching skills to improve education standards.

In partnership with the local school management committees, we are in the process of completing a school extension in Thehe and we are about to start building an extension to the primary school in Maila.

New education and volunteer centre

We are developing an education and volunteer centre in the capital of Humla, Simikot, which will house three large classrooms that will be used for teaching English to teachers and students and as a community centre, a children’s library, a Fairtrade (www.fairtrade.net) café that will act as a training facility, and land for permaculture, poultry rearing and testing improved seed varieties. The land has been purchased for this centre and we plan to start building in spring 2010 with the help of Irish volunteers. Volunteer with us >

Literacy and vocational training

In conjunction with our programmes in food production, micro-finance and micro-business, we are working with community groups comprised largely of woman, to provide literacy and micro-finance/micro-business education and training. With basic literacy skills, women are in a position to run micro-finance schemes to help fund micro-businesses. We will also be providing vocational training to men in order to improve their chances of getting more highly skilled, and hence better paid, migratory labour.
