Hi guys, International Women's Day is next Monday, so I thought it would be opportune to blog about this theme in our work programmes in Nepal.  Our income generation programmes, which began in 2009 at a relatively small scale, increased household income by up to 27%, a fantastic result given that this is just the first year.  All of this income was earned by women, which gives them huge bargaining power in their own households.

Hi guys

Hi guys! Our programme with the Jes students in Galway won them the Young Volunteer of the Year at the Mayor's Awards in Galway last night! We are all in total shock, as these awards are focused on community groups, so we thought that, as we work in Nepal, we would be most unlikely to win. There are 13 students in the group, and Amanda, baby Donagh and myself were all in the Black Box last night for the ceremony, which was broadcast live on Galway Bay FM. The award goes to the group of transition year students who we have been working with this year at Colaiste Iognaid ('The Jes').

Blog 13th January 2010

Well, we’ve gone in Galway from severe flooding in December to a water shortage in January! Talk about extreme weather. Podge, my goldfish, was found floating in the garden pond yesterday morning, so I laid him to rest in the compost bin. I think he froze to death. Maybe we could rename him Donegal Catch! Maybe we will have a heat wave next? That would be nice!

Happy New Year! I can’t believe it’s 2010. Where did the last ten years go? It doesn’t seem like ten years since I was down in Kilkenny in Langtons on the eve of the millennium, ringing in the New Year!

This is my first attempt at writing a blog!  Hope I don’t bore you all too much with my weekly meanderings!
 
 All is well here, frantic as ever with street collections and a whole host of fundraising going on.  The team is working really hard, but hopefully we will be rewarded with a good boost to our coffers to take us through the lean months of January and February next year.
